The Science of Timing

Demodex mites are nocturnal.
So is this serum.

Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are obligate follicular mites — they live deep within hair follicles and sebaceous glands. During the day, they retreat into follicular canals. At night, they migrate toward follicular openings to feed and reproduce.

This nocturnal migration is their moment of maximum vulnerability. An evening leave-on serum applied before sleep reaches mites at the precise moment of their greatest surface exposure — and maintains continuous demodecidal pressure throughout the night.

The Formulation

Two phases. One purpose.

The serum separates into two distinct layers on standing. This is intentional. Keeping the oil and aqueous phases separate until the moment of use prevents premature chemical interaction and ensures full-potency delivery of both phases with every application. Shake vigorously before each use.

Oil Phase — Top Layer

Sustained Overnight Follicular Pressure

The oil phase maintains continuous contact with follicular contents throughout the night — applying demodecidal biochemical stress without providing nutritive lipids that would feed mites.

  • Castor Oil ~90% ricinoleic acid — structurally mismatched to Demodex metabolism. Demonstrated demodecidal activity. Anti-inflammatory to host tissue. 10%
  • MCT Oil Medium-chain triglycerides (C8/C10) — absent from human sebum. Not metabolizable by Demodex. Reduces viscosity of castor oil for comfortable application. 20%

Aqueous Phase — Bottom Layer

Immediate Antimicrobial Activity on Application

The aqueous phase delivers rapid antimicrobial and penetrating activity the moment the serum is applied. Broad-spectrum oxidative action, follicular access, and moisture balance.

  • Povidone-Iodine 1% final concentration. Broad-spectrum antimicrobial. Oxidative action against bacteria, fungi, and Demodex mites. Zero documented resistance in 70+ years. 1% final
  • Propylene Glycol Humectant and co-solvent. Maintains scalp moisture balance during overnight use. Improves distribution of the aqueous phase. 4%
  • DMSO (optional) Penetration enhancer. Carries active ingredients deeper into follicular canals. Kept intentionally low to avoid irritation or unintended transport. 1%
  • Purified Water Vehicle for water-soluble components. Adjusted to complete aqueous phase volume. q.s.

Usage Protocol

Five steps. Every evening.

Apply once daily in the evening, ideally within an hour or two of going to bed. Frequency may be reduced to every other evening after 3–4 weeks of consistent use.

Shake vigorously — every time
The serum separates on standing. Vigorous shaking for 5–10 seconds is essential before every application. Do not skip this step — shaking is what creates the active dispersion.

Apply directly to the scalp
Dispense a small amount onto your fingertips or directly onto the scalp. Apply to the scalp surface — not the hair length. A half-teaspoon is typically sufficient.

Massage gently with fingertips
Use gentle circular motions to distribute the serum across the scalp. Focus on affected areas. Work the serum toward follicular openings. Light pressure is sufficient.

Use the included brush to work it in
After fingertip application, use the included soft-tipped silicone scalp brush to improve dispersion and follicular penetration. 30–60 seconds of gentle circular motion.

Allow to air-dry — leave on overnight
Allow the scalp to air-dry for a few minutes. Do not blow-dry. Leave on overnight — do not rinse. The therapeutic benefit depends on sustained overnight contact during peak mite activity.

Morning: rinse naturally in the shower

What to avoid — and why it matters.

Many common hair products contain sebum-like lipids that Demodex mites use as a food source. Using them alongside this serum may actively counteract treatment.

Sebum-Mimetic Oils

Olive, almond, avocado, sunflower, coconut, jojoba, argan. These contain long-chain triglycerides (C16–C18) that closely resemble human sebum — the primary Demodex food source. Applying them after treatment feeds the mites you just treated.

Conventional Shampoos

Most shampoos deposit sebum-like conditioning residues in follicles after rinsing — creating what appears to be a clean scalp while the follicular environment becomes more hospitable to Demodex. Use only the companion Therapeutic Anti-Demodex Shampoo.
